My dog is afraid of heights

Dissecting Metaphors by DM Adil

It all began on an ordinary day when I took my 7-month-old mixed breed pup, Nezuko, out for a stroll at the mall. As we approached the terrace of the second floor, I noticed her growing hesitant, refusing to come closer. The next thing I knew, she was trembling, her body shaking with what I could only interpret as fear. The incident left me surprised and later, I discovered a harsh truth; my beloved Nezuko has a fear of heights.

The confirmation came soon after, during a visit to Camora — our go-to place for shooting promotional ads. It was at that moment, observing her panic, that I knew I had to do something. This fascinating journey of uncovering her fear led me to seek out solutions, to find ways of comforting Nezuko and helping her face her obstacles.

Just like humans, dogs can have various phobias, including acrophobia — the fear of heights. While we often associate acrophobia with humans, dogs can also experience this fear to varying degrees. Acrophobia in dogs can manifest in different ways, such as fear of walking on elevated surfaces, crossing bridges, or even reluctance to climb upstairs or use ramps.

As we embarked on this unique quest together, I’d like to share some of the strategies we’ve found helpful:

  1. Understanding and patience: Recognize your dog’s fear, no matter how trivial it may seem, and understand the importance of patience. Avoid forcing your dog into a situation they aren’t comfortable with as it might result in them growing even more fearful. Instead, work at their pace, gradually demonstrating that there’s nothing to be afraid of.
  2. Positive reinforcement: Encourage your dog to face their fears with positive reinforcement. Reward them with praise, affection, or treats whenever they make progress or take small steps toward overcoming their fear. The association of positive experiences with the fear-inducing situation can significantly help reduce their anxiety.
  3. Training and expert advice: If your dog’s fear seems difficult to manage, don’t hesitate to engage with a professional dog trainer or seek expert advice. Behavioral training, combined with techniques suited for tackling specific fears, can help your dog regain confidence and learn to cope with challenging situations.

As a dog owner, it’s essential to remember that your furry friend relies on you for comfort, reassurance, and guidance. Nezuko’s fear of heights was a revelation, bringing us closer and teaching me to be more empathetic toward her struggles.

Every dog is unique, and while Nezuko’s story might not be universal, it is a testament to the courage it takes to overcome one’s fears. To every dog owner out there, know that facing challenges together with your canine buddy can bring you closer and create an unbreakable bond that lasts a lifetime.

In facing Nezuko’s fear of heights, we’ve grown and learned more about each other. So, I say, bring it on, world! We have a long journey ahead, and together, we’ll reach new heights.
